The Kouloura family tavern, having taken its name by the (Kouloura) cove at the northeast of Corfu stands out right there since 1958, taking its guests along on a culinary journey of authentic greek and corfiot cuisine.
Initially, it used to function as a coffee shop, tavern, grocery store, occasionally an inn, and mainly as a meeting place for local fishermen, residents and traders who gathered here daily for their transactions.
Over the years and with the arrival of the first visitors to the area, the tavern is being modernized and gradually it acquires its present form. Always in perfect harmony with the surroundings and without ever losing its identity, it still remains to this day a small traditional corfiot tavern that can win the visitor’s heart over the first bite!
- Situated in Kouloura is one of the most renowned and historical Venetian architecture mansions of Corfu, built right over the sea. The mansion as well as the surrounding area, during the 16th century, was owned by the Quartanos, a Noble family of Venetian origin. Actually, it served originally as a fortress, where it shielded the area from raids mainly by pirates. The fort was eventually converted into an 18th century stately home by the Gennatas family, who hail from the Gennatas family of Kefalonia.
- After many decades, and around the 1960s, mansion finally ends up in the hands of Disney’s Von Hughes, a retired Admiral of the British Royal Navy and son of one of the Gennata nieces, who was married to an English nobleman of the Von Hughes family.
- In 1988 the villa of Kouloura will be taken over by the 60-year-old granddaughter of the FIAT founder Giovanni Agnelli, named Umberta Nasi, who along with her husband Giorgio Marsan bought and renovated the villa, which they used as their summer residence. After their death, the villa was handed down to Umberta Nasi’s grandchildren. Over these six centuries of history, the Villa of Kouloura has hosted so many significant personalities not only from Greece but all over the world.
- The church at the entrance of the mansion was built in honor of St. Nicholas of Petra. According to different sources, on May 20, 1085 AD an Italian ship carrying the relic of St. Nicholas to Italy, passing through the strait of Corfu and due to bad weather, stopped at Kouloura. Since then and every year on May 20, there is a church service. The tombs of the mansion’s owners, old paintings and murals, are also preserved there.
The unharmed beauty of the place, the legends and the real history of the area entice the visitor on an unforgettable journey from yesterday to today.
